2004 ISEF NEWSLETTER VOLUME #2

Portland. Oregon

> Anna's ISEF adventures

Greetings from Portland, Oregon:

Our delegation arrived in Portland on Saturday (May 8) at 8:00 PM local time. This was 11 PM Connecticut time meaning we had been en route for over 12 hours. Since we had only had airline food since noon we finished off a few pizzas before retiring.

Sunday morning we all paid tribute to our mothers by consuming a magnificent brunch on the ship 'Portland Spirit'. We cruised the Willamette River up stream from the city. We observed an interesting array of $500,000 floating houses on the river among the many sights.

We then changed for the "nit and gritty" of our trip. We set up our projects in the Oregon Convention Center. Over 1000 students are expected for this week-long event.

The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) allows 3 days for project set up. We were done in less then 3 hours, a tribute to the preparation of the students. Now we have some time to see Portland before the anxiety of Wednesday judging.

Sunday night the students exchanged pins with students from other states and countries. Over 40 nations are represented here. The highlight of the evening was Anna's trade of a block of pins for a Western hat from an ISEF volunteer.

Today (Monday) we will follow the foot steps of Lewis and Clark to the mouth of the Columbia river. Look to tomorrow's newsletter for more information on this trip
