New England Students Win Stockholm Junior Water Prize
the Most Prestigious Youth Award for Water Science Research

(Woburn, MA) The New England Water Environment Association proudly announces the 2003 New England Stockholm Junior Water Prize Winners.

  • Igor Zelenberg of Stamford, Connecticut, a 12th grader at Stamford High School, is the 2003 Connecticut Stockholm Junior Water Prize Winner for his project, "Trophic Level Heavy Metal Bioaccumulation in Long Island Sound's Great Meadow Marsh."
  • Matthew E. DeSilva of Taunton, Massachusetts, a 10th grader at Taunton High School, is the 2003 Massachusetts Stockholm Junior Water Prize Winner for his project, "How Effective is Lobster Shell Chitin in Filtering Out Wastewater Metallic Ions?"
  • Paul Magyar of Providence, Rhode Island, a 10th grader at Classical High School, is the 2003 Rhode Island Stockholm Junior Water Prize Winner for his project, "Analysis of Dissolved Organic Matter and Dissolved Copper in Narragansett Bay."
  • Luke Thornblade of Orwell, Vermont, a 12th grader at Fair Haven Union School, is the 2003 Vermont Stockholm Junior Water Prize Winner for his project, "Arsenic Problem."


The students will be honored by the New England Water Environment Association with a special ceremony at the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, Vermont on June 1, 2003.

"The New England Water Environment Association is inspired by these students and their research," stated President Norton True. "The future holds significant challenges for the water environment field. It's inspiring to know that the next generation has leaders such as Igor, Matthew, Paul, and Luke to tackle the problems and make a difference."

The students are also eligible to go to the national competition in Dallas, Texas, June 5-7, to compete for $2,500 and the opportunity to represent the United States at the international competition in Stockholm, Sweden, the most prestigious competition for a water-related science project in the world. Igor Zelenberg of Connecticut was also chosen as the top student in New England, earning him a travel sponsorship to the national competition provided by CH2M HILL, a global project delivery company with an office in Boston.

The New England Water Environment Association is a Member Association of the Water Environment Federation, which sponsors the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize at the national level with support from The Coca-Cola Company and ITT Industries, also the international sponsor. The Federation is a not-for profit technical and educational services organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the global water environment.
